How to Calculate the Energy of a Round of Ammunition
The kinetic energy of a bullet is calculated using the formula E = ½ × m × v², where m is the mass in kilograms and v is the velocity in meters per second. The result is expressed in joules (J).
- Weight conversion: 1 grain = 0.0648 grams = 0.0000648 kg.
- Speed conversion: 1 fps (feet per second) = 0.3048 m/s.
- Power factor: weight (grains) × velocity (fps) ÷ 1000.
