How to Calculate the Energy of a Round of Ammunition

The kinetic energy of a bullet is calculated using the formula E = ½ × m × v², where m is the mass in kilograms and v is the velocity in meters per second. The result is expressed in joules (J).

A 124-grain bullet traveling at 360 m/s delivers approximately 521 joules. The same round, measured at 1,180 fps, has a power factor of approximately 146, which is classified as "Minor" under most dynamic competition rules.
