Sports Detention in France: What's Changing in 2026

SIA, quotas, renewals: A comprehensive overview of this year’s regulatory changes, explained simply and without sensationalism.

Sports Detention in France: What's Changing in 2026

French regulations change regularly, and rumors always spread faster than official announcements. Here is some practical information for licensed sport shooters; be sure to verify this information with official sources before taking any action.

The SIA Is Becoming the Go-To Option

The Weapons Information System (SIA) is now fully operational for FFTir license holders. Any purchase, sale, or significant modification must be processed through your SIA account. Helpful tip: Check right away to make sure your SIA digital inventory matches your actual holdings; discrepancies detected during renewal are the leading cause of administrative delays.

What Remains the Same

The ownership quotas for Category B remain the same, as do the requirements for prior notification. The five-year renewal deadlines, however, will fall en masse in 2026–2027: plan ahead by three months, as the prefectures will be very busy.

Armory DataArmory Policy: We deliberately do not store any official documents related to firearms. Note your due dates in the notes section of your records, and keep the originals at home, offline.

The Unchanging Fundamentals

A valid federal license with a favorable assessment, a prefectural authorization for Category B renewed every five years, and an up-to-date shooting log showing the required supervised shooting sessions spaced out throughout the year: these pillars remain the foundation of a worry-free sporting firearm ownership experience. Plan ahead for each deadline by several months, as processing times tend to lengthen during periods of high renewal volume.

Where to verify the information

The only authoritative sources are: Légifrance, the Ministry of the Interior’s SIA portal, and your federation. If in doubt, your gun dealer and your club are your first reliable points of contact. Be wary of screenshots circulating in discussion groups: they are often outdated or incomplete.
